Klaus-Peter Nicolay, a trained reproduction photographer, studied photography in Cologne, printing technology in Wuppertal and completed his studies in 1979 with a degree in printing technology. After his studies, he worked as editor and chief editor in (at that time) established trade journals in the printing industry such as “Druckspiegel”, “Polygraph” and “Offset-Technik” before becoming a member of the management board at Mannesmann Scangraphic, in Wedel near Hamburg. There he coordinated the communication and international advertising and marketing activities of the typesetting and reproduction equipment manufacturer.
In 1995 Klaus-Peter Nicolay became self-employed as a design and media producer with the company arcus design & verlag. To this day an advertising agency and a publishing house are still active under the management of the company. From his experience comes the editorial concept of two trade journals “Druckmarkt” and the Swiss trade journal “Druckmarkt Schweiz” as well as their features “Druckmarkt impressions” and “Druckmarkt COLLECTION”. The magazines are, among other things, the official professional bodies of the initiative Print digital! of f:mp. (Verband Medienproduktioner) and partners of the Doxnet network and numerous international trade fairs.
It was also due to his initiative that today’s “Swiss Print Award” was established in 2004 and is now one of the most coveted and recognized competitions for printed matter in Switzerland.
Klaus-Peter Nicolay is also active as an author and co-author of extensive specialist books (e.g. Heidelberg’s “Handbuch der Printmedien”, bvdm’s “Niedrigenergie- und LED-UV-Druck”, Marketing-Glossar, Zahlen-Glossar etc.) and writes for almost all relevant trade magazines in the D/A/CH region.
Additionally, Nicolay is a ghost writer for a wide variety of companies in the industry, writing white papers, brochure texts, blogs, specialist articles, and is also active as a consultant in innovation circles within the print and media industry.
From his daily intensive contact with the worldwide manufacturer and user scene, he knows the movers and shakers and the current developments of the industry. He evaluates, presents and analytically documents the trends, facts and background of the printing industry in specialist articles, and in various media and lecture series.
Klaus-Peter Nicolay has been President of the EDP Association (European Digital Press) since 2016 and is also a member of the Technical Committee that presents the annual EDP Awards, most likely the only technology award for digital print technologies in Europe.
At the end of 2018, in collaboration with Bernd Zipper, the idea was conceived to bring together the long-standing partnership in the form of a single print publication. The result was the newspaper product, “beyondprint unplugged”, which deals with topics such as print, e-commerce and transformation and provides critical reports on the industry. Nicolay is the editor-in-chief of this project, which is then published by his publishing house. Bernd Zipper is the editor of the publication, which is now the winner of the “Print Innovation Award”, an annual prize awarded by the print community of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers WAN-Ifra, and which is valid worldwide.
