Highly personalised, handwritten cards and letters in print runs of up to seven figures – that is the specialty of Wunderpen GmbH. As of now, the MarTech company from Berlin, which developed a handwriting robot for this purpose and primarily serves B2B customers, belongs to the Mass Customisation Group, or MCG for short, an investment company of the Schürfeld Group (Hamburg).
Wunderpen was founded in 2016 by Peter Lecour and has made a name for itself with its self-developed technology, especially in the high-performance CRM and MarTech industries. The company, which today employs 35 people, regularly produces several million handwritten letters and cards for well-known companies from the fashion and cosmetics industries, e-commerce players, furniture retailers, banks, and the automotive sector.
As Peter Lecour explains, Wunderpen had already been on the lookout for a suitable partner since 2021, in order to more quickly develop the technology further and also to be able to develop it internationally. With the Schürfeld Group – accompanied by the Hamburg-based management and HR consultancy Knox – they have now found the right partner for the M&A.
“In conjunction with the other companies in the group, Wunderpen can now also expand its own product portfolio and offer the entire spectrum of solutions in the field of mass customisation,” explains Peter Lecour, who will continue to be the managing director of Wunderpen, but at the same time become a co-partner of MCG. “Wunderpen is an ideal fit in the world of high-value customer communications, which must respond more and more personally to the respective needs of increasingly fragmented target groups,” adds Cornel von Geyr, Managing Director of MCG.
Capital increase planned
In addition to the actual investment, MCG is also providing Wunderpen with the necessary funds through a capital increase in the seven-digit range. This is intended, among other things, to expand the scalability of the processes as well as the machine park of 2nd generation handwriting robots and to invest in sales.
Specialised in mass customisation
After Geiger-Notes AG and msp druck und medien GmbH, Wunderpen is the third company to join MCG. The Mass Customisation Group was founded in 2022 as part of the Schürfeld Group and bundles various investments in companies from the paper, printing and advertising materials sectors as well as activities in sustainable, high-quality print products, direct mailings and fulfillment.
