Zipper’s Daily Blackprint, Day 10: No Deal without China!

0

大家好! What would the global economy be without China? What would drupa be without China? 1,646 exhibitors are represented in Düsseldorf in 2024 – 417 of them are from China, with a total of 26,000 m2 of exhibition space. And: around 25% of all visitors to the print mega-event in Düsseldorf come from China. Incredible.

There are even rumors that it could easily have been way more exhibitors – but for reasons of proportionality, the organizers intervened. Personally, I am delighted about the internationality of drupa – because it is a reflection of the global printing industry.

But not every visitor is happy with the presence of their Chinese colleagues – every now and then you hear a comment or two at the ‘Bratwurst front’ (i.e. at the tables in the open-air area where the German sausage speciality is usually sold) – ‘whether that’s necessary’. Short answer: Yes.

Without China, the global printing industry would hardly be able to function. Suppliers such as Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and many others are dependent on support from the Middle Kingdom. Almost 65% of all consumables (apart from paper) in the printing industry come from China: pigments, colors, inks.

Without China, the world would quickly be black and white. An unusual picture, especially considering that it looked very different just eight years ago. Here too, drupa shows that it really is the global marketplace for the printing industry – and that this No. 1 marketplace (despite all the competing events) is in Germany. That is sensational, and we can be a bit proud of it. 明天见
