Without doubt, drupa is the world’s leading trade fair for the printing industry. And there are quite a few entrepreneurs who ask themselves: what should I buy? Well, I am a consultant and meet one or two customers here. So I am no stranger to the question ‘Bernd, what should I buy?’ and I am happy to answer it, as follows:

‘If you have really waited eight years to make new investments in your company – turn around and see if there is still a printing company there to invest in!’. In fact, the question of where and how to invest is not easy to answer.

I personally believe that our industry would benefit greatly from a massive optimization of customer service (especially digital customer service) – but this does not require a machine, but rather people, software and agile organizations. I also believe that in the future, more should be invested in mass customization rather than mass production – a topic that is not well received by many traditionally oriented suppliers and printers, but unfortunately reflects the actual situation.

And so – after an eight-year break – the question arises as to what significance drupa will have in our industry in the future. Should we wait until the next drupa before making our next innovation investment, or not?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a real drupa fan, but we need to discuss whether the investment and innovation cycles of our industry don’t also need a correspondingly adapted capital goods fair. Because, let’s not forget: There are still printers who use drupa as an opportunity to buy the new machine.

Business at drupa 2024 is going very well – perhaps even better than some had expected – but the speed of innovation cycles is constantly increasing. In the future, this will have to be taken into account, otherwise another trade fair location (China?) – or even the suppliers themselves with their own open house events – may take over.
