No sugarcoating it: The phase of economic weakness that has already characterized large parts of the past year has continued into the fourth quarter of 2023. This is also reflected in the development of average prices in online print, as the current ZOPI, the zipcon Online Print Price Index, shows. While prices in the flyer segment remained virtually unchanged in the final months of 2023, they fell slightly in the shopping basket cluster for the first time in a long time.

There was little movement in average online print prices in the third quarter of the year: While they again settled at a very slightly higher level in the flyer segment, with a peak in July, the average prices for the shopping cart in Q3 were slightly higher than in Q2, but still well below the values for the previous year.

The average online print prices for the traditional print product also increased between April and June of this year. For some manufacturers, the increase was even in the double digits. After prices fell at the end of the first quarter for the first time, they rose again slightly in the following months.

This means that online print prices appear to be decoupling from graphic paper prices again for the first time – after all, these have slightly fallen recently. The ZOPI shopping cart is somewhat different.

Prices for print products continue to rise – as shown by the current zipcon Online Print Price Index, which looks at the first quarter of 2022. This puts print – at least in terms of appearance – seamlessly between food, gasoline, and electricity. Following the impact of the pandemic, which has hit various industries and markets with varying degrees of severity over the past two years, the consequences of the war in Ukraine are being felt by everyone.

At first, paper “only” became more expensive, now in some places it is even in short supply. As if the pandemic and the reintroduction of the obligation to file for insolvency hadn’t already hurt the printing industry and its companies enough. Now there’s the paper shortage. The quarterly Zipcon Online print Price Index (ZOPI) shows whether and to what extent the battle for paper has affected the pricing of online print shops.
